As a relatively unrecognised destination, Engelberg nevertheless deserves attention. While the first building constructed at the foot of the Titlis was a 12th-century Benedictine monastery, today, the little village enjoys modern facilities including the only cableway in the world with cable cars which turn 360° during the ascent to allow the skiers to admire the magnificent view. Furthermore Engelberg enjoys exceptional snowfalls, allowing skiers the advantage of the resort's fine ski slopes, sometimes from as early as October. Finally, although the village is still a little gem with its wooden chalets, the resort does possess all the installations expected of a top class resort: sports centre, swimming pool, casino, etc. However disgruntled people bemoan the fact that the ski area is only 82km in extent... .(+)
